Here a user must provide contact information (i.e., name, telephone and shipping address) and financial information (i.e., credit card number, expiration date). This information is used for billing purposes and to fill customer's orders. If we have trouble processing an order, this contact information is used to get in touch with the user.
4.
Cookies
A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user's hard drive containing information about the user. Usage of a cookie is in no way linked to any personally identifiable information while on our websites. Cookies can enable us to track and target the interests of our users to enhance the experience on our site. You can disable cookies by changing the settings on your browser. If a user rejects the cookie, they may still use our site. The only drawback to this is that the user will be limited in some areas of our site. For example, the user will not be able to participate in any of our Sweepstakes, Contests or Special Offers that take place. This privacy statement covers the use of cookies by www.audible.com and www.audible.co.uk only and does not cover the use of cookies by any advertisers. More information on cookies can be found at www.allaboutcookies.org.
5.
Third Party Advertisers
Audible uses pixels, or transparent GIF files, in connection with online advertising. These GIF files are provided by our ad management partner, DoubleClick. These files enable DoubleClick to recognize a unique cookie on your Web browser, which in turn enables us to learn which advertisements bring users to our website. The cookie was placed by us, or by another advertiser who works with DoubleClick. With cookies and GIF files, the information that we collect and share is anonymous and not personally identifiable. It does not contain your name, address, telephone number, or email address. For more information about DoubleClick, including information about how to opt out of these technologies, go to http://www.doubleclick.net/us/corporate/privacy. See also Section 4 "Cookies".
6.
Log Files
We use IP addresses to analyze trends, administer the site, track user's movement, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information.
7.
Sharing
We work together with other businesses to provide some of our services to you. Sometimes fulfilling our obligations to you requires that we share your information with these businesses. For example, we share information with credit card processors and companies that will ship products to you. We also use other companies to provide services to us, including storing our customer data, sending emails and providing marketing assistance. These companies need access to our customer information but they are not entitled to use it for any other purpose. Furthermore, we have contracts in place with these companies that require them to process our customer data in accordance with either US law, for users in the US, or UK data protection laws or the Safe Harbor Principles, for users in the UK. By purchasing our products and services you consent to us sharing your information with such third parties. Finally, since our business requires us to pay royalties based on the sale of each of our audio programs, we must report aggregate anonymous sales figures to the publishers with whom we work. However we do not share any information about individual customers with publishers without your authorization.
8.
Links
These websites contain links to other sites. Please be aware that Audible is not responsible for the privacy practices of such other sites. We encourage our users, when they leave our site, to read the privacy statements of each and every website that collects personally identifiable information. This privacy statement applies solely to information collected by Audible's websites.
9.
Affiliate Program
Audible's Affiliate Program pays website owners a commission for driving quality traffic to Audible. To register for the Audible Affiliate Program, you will be taken to a third party site. We encourage our users, when they leave our site, to read the privacy statements of each and every website that collects personally identifiable information. This privacy statement applies solely to information collected by Audible's websites.
10.
Surveys & Contests
From time-to-time our sites request information from users via surveys or contests. Participation in these surveys or contests is completely voluntary and the user therefore has a choice whether or not to disclose this information. Information requested may include contact information (such as name and shipping address), and demographic information (such as zip code, age level). Contact information will be used to notify the winners and award prizes. Survey information will be used for purposes of monitoring or improving use of and satisfaction with these websites.
11.
Spread the Words Campaign
If a user elects to participate in our Tell-a-Friend referral program for recruiting a friend to become a customer of Audible, we will ask for the friend's name and email address. Audible will automatically send the friend a one-time email, inviting them to sign up, visit the site or try our product. This is the sole purpose for which your friend's contact details will be used. You acknowledge that your name will be provided to your friend as part of the referral process and to reduce nuisance emails. We ask the friend during the registration stage for the Audible.com or Audible.co.uk user name of the recruiter. Audible, Inc. uses this referral information to enable both the user and the friend to collect rewards. Please note that by providing us with your friend's name and email address you confirm that your friend has consented to receive this message.

When users log in to their own accounts, they will be able to see the status of their friends' participation in the program in a non-personally identifiable form (e.g., a tally of a user's referrals, including the rewards the user has earned as a result of the friend's activities.)

Friends recruited through this program will register with us and enjoy all of the benefits of being a user.
12.
Testimonials
Audible appreciates positive feedback from our users. We may use comments from surveys and emails we receive from our users in our marketing and promotional materials. By providing Audible with such comments, you give Audible permission to use your comment for any promotional purpose.
13.
Security
These websites take every precaution to protect users' information. When users submit personally identifiable information via the websites, the information is protected both online and off-line.

When our registration/order form asks users to enter personally identifiable information (such as credit card number), that information is encrypted and is protected with the best encryption software in the industry - SSL. While on a secure page, such as our order form, the lock icon on the bottom of Web browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer becomes locked, as opposed to un-locked, or open, when you are just "surfing".

While we use SSL encryption to protect personally identifiable information online, we also do everything in our power to protect user information off-line. All of our users' information, not just the personally identifiable information mentioned above, is restricted in our offices. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, a billing clerk or customer service representative) are granted access to personally identifiable information. Our employees must use password-protected screen-savers when they leave their desk. When they return, they must re-enter their password to re-gain access to user information. Furthermore, ALL employees are kept up-to-date on our security and privacy practices. Every quarter, as well as any time new policies are added, our employees are notified and/or reminded about the importance we place on privacy, and what they can do to ensure our customers' information is protected. Finally, the servers that we store personally identifiable information on are kept in a secure environment, behind a locked cage.

If you have any questions about the security at our websites, you can send an email to customer_service@audible.com.
14.
Special Offers
We send all new members a welcoming email to verify password and username. Established members will occasionally receive information on products, services, special deals, and a newsletter. Out of respect for the privacy of our users we present the option to not receive these types of communications. Please see description of our Choice/Opt-out/Opt-in policy below.
15.
Website Activity
Audible uses a third party tracking utility to track end-user activity through our site through the use of cookies. Activity is tracked in an effort to make our site easy to navigate through, and to find out which areas of our sites draw the most attention. The information tracked are such things as Most Requested Page, Least Requested Page, Top Entry Page, Top Path Through Site, cities users are visiting from, average length of time spent at the site, etc. The information gathered is anonymised.
16.
Site and Service Updates
We may send the user site and service announcement updates. Members are not able to un-subscribe from service announcements, which contain important information about the service. We communicate with the user regarding updates to our site and service and issues relating to their account via email or phone.
17.
Correcting/Updating Personal Information
If a user's personally identifiable information changes (such as post or zip code), or if a user no longer desires our service, we will endeavor to provide a way to correct, update, or remove that user's personal data from our databases.

To receive a copy of your personally identifiable information which Audible holds about you, please contact customer_service@audible.com (for Audible.com) or update_uk@audible.co.uk (for Audible.co.uk). To notify Audible.com of a change, you can go to the My Account pages located at http://www.audible.com/myaccount or email Customer Support at customer_service@audible.com.
To notify Audible.co.uk of a change, please email us at update_uk@audible.co.uk.
You will receive a response to your request within twenty (20) business days.
18.
Choice/Opt-out/Opt-in
By registering with Audible.com or Audible.co.uk, you agree to receive promotional materials via email from Audible. Our users are given the opportunity to opt-out of having their information used for purposes not directly related to our websites at the point where we ask for the information. For example, our order form has an opt-out mechanism so users who buy a product from us, but don't want any marketing material, can keep their email address off of our lists.

Users who no longer wish to receive our newsletter or promotional materials sent by Audible on behalf of our partners may opt-out of receiving these communications by replying with unsubscribe in the subject line of the email or by emailing us at remove@audible.com or by contacting customer_service@audible.com (for Audible.com) or at remove_uk@audible.co.uk (for Audible.co.uk).

Audible will never share your information with any other party (except as set out in the "Sharing" section), nor contact you about their products or services without your express consent. This will be requested either by a specific email form, or via the Email Preferences in the My Account section of the website. Additionally, users may have the option to opt-in to have their information shared with trusted third parties who may use such information to contact users directly. Users who do opt-in to have their information shared with a third party should be aware that their information will be subject to the privacy practices of such third parties and users are advised to consider the policies of each such third party prior to any opt-in for information sharing. Audible selects its third party partners with care but does not have any ongoing control over the privacy practices of such third parties.
19.
Notification of Changes
If we decide to change our privacy policy, we will post those changes on our Homepage so our users are always aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances, if any, we disclose it. If at any point we decide to use personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time it was collected, we will notify users by email. Users will have a choice as to whether or not we use their information in this different manner. We will use information in accordance with the privacy policy under which the information was collected.
20.
Legal Obligations
Though we make every effort to preserve user privacy, we may need to disclose personal information when required by law wherein we have a good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with a current judicial proceeding, a court order or legal process served on our website.
