LETTER FROM FORMER FBI AGENT JOHN DOUGLAS

Dear Students:

My name is John Douglas. I retired from the FBI in 1995 after a long career in law enforcement and criminal profiling. You can see the kind of work I did in films such as Silence of the Lambs and television series like Law and Order, Cold Case File and Criminal Intent. I have also raised three kids.

I think College Tonight is a great idea. I wish it existed when I was in school. Furthermore, I wish the Internet existed when I was in school. Other than sending messages telepathically or reading minds, it's the fastest and most efficient way to send information quickly to a variety of sources (computers, cell phones, PDAs and the list is growing), get information on just about anything, download music, pictures and video and share the world with hundreds of millions of people. It's a great invention for sure and I use it myself for providing information and conducting business. But as you know, almost anything, when used improperly or illegally, can become potentially dangerous.

Most of you know an awful lot about the Internet. Far more than most adults do today. But through experience, working with law enforcement and talking to individuals, there are some very simple things you can do to protect yourself, your family and your friends from people who would wish to do you harm. Here's my list:

1. Your identity:

Nobody owns it but YOU. Keep it that way. Whenever you fill out information on the Internet or send email, you are giving the recipient information about you. It may be just your age or the city in which you live, but it could be your name, address, telephone number, school, and other very personal information. If you don't know the person or recognize a company name, don't give out your identity or anyone else's

2. Chat Room Creep:

This site is devoted to college students and alumni to meet and share information. That doesn't mean everyone who interacts within the website is such a person or even that if they are, they will act in a manner consistent with the terms of use or privacy policy. They could be creeps. You wouldn't give a stranger who you met on the street or in a mall a lot of personal information or agree to meet them in a less public place. Don't do it on the Internet either. If someone you meet on the Internet wants to meet you in person, be wary of such a request, even if they seem really nice, really cool or really interesting.

3. Private: No Entry:

Never go into a private chat room with someone you do not know. It's an invitation to trouble. Away from the other chat room participants, the other person can do mischievous things that he or she could not get away with in an open chat room. Think of it as being analogous to getting into the car with a stranger. You wouldn't do that either. If someone you don't know well invites you to a private chat room, just say no thanks.

4. Mean and Hostile Messages:

No one likes to be ignored but responding to these kinds of messages, especially from someone you don't know, is exactly what the sender wants. It causes you to engage in an activity that's uncomfortable or unpleasant for you but one that is enjoyable to the sender. This applies to chat rooms, emails, text messages on your cell phones and any other communication.

If you get any unwelcome communication from a stranger or a friend, tell a confidant of your situation. They should be able to take appropriate steps to stop this kind of harassment.

5. Let Your Instincts Do the Walking:

You've made it to college and perhaps, beyond. You're feeling pretty accomplished. You should. You've learned the basics about navigating your world. You are cognizant of what's right and what's wrong and have five basic senses to tell you about your environment. You also have that sixth sense; you know the one that gives you a creepy feeling, or a chill, a suspicion or a momentary fear. Use it when you're interacting with others on the Internet. If you feel like something strange is going on, it probably is. Get yourself out of that situation and alert your parents or another responsible adult. I'm referring to predators and I know a lot about them and how they operate. Predators look for vulnerable people. They try to hook you in by sounding real nice or understanding. Maybe you feel your friends or parents dont understand anything about you, you broke up with someone, had a fight with a friend, got a lousy grade, had a bad day or are just plain lonely. Just remember that no matter what may have happened to upset you, there is someone you can talk to who is better than a stranger in a chat room or who emails or IMs you. The stranger may be well-intentioned and have a lot of good things to say, but don't take the chance, especially when you are feeling vulnerable or think that no one else cares.

If you want more information or details about what to do or what to look for in order to stay safe, there are numerous websites to visit. Two of the ones that I like are http://chatdanger.net and http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk which are informative, fun and easy to navigate. Best of all, there's advice from people just like you.

Enjoy the website and stay safe.

Sincerely,

John Douglas
